Bahamas Minister Sears to discuss Cuban concerns

Bahamian Ambassador Joshua Sears hopes to meet again with Cuban-American Congress members in Washington this week to discuss the alleged “mistreatment” of detained Cubans.

The proposed meeting would come as a follow-up to an earlier conference between Ambassador Sears, Congress member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and father and son duo Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart. The American officials had expressed concern for Cubans held at The Carmichael Road Detention Centre.

Cable Bahamas gets gospel TV

With such an increasing demand for gospel music, the Bahamian community is set to benefit from the recent arrival of a new gospel television channel.

The Gospel Music Channel was recently launched on Oceans 12 Digital TV, a subsidiary of Cable Bahamas and is now accessible to all subscribers of the new digital television system offered by Cable Bahamas.

Studies complete for stadium in the Bahamas

In preparation for the $30 million sports stadium China has offered to build for The Bahamas, representatives from a Chinese delegation on official visit to the country signed an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently.

Technical studies for the stadium have been completed and the Chinese Assistant Minister of Commerce of The People’s Republic of China, Fu Ziying, anticipated a groundbreaking date of July 10, The Bahamas’ independence anniversary.

Commonwealth is the boss on the BISX

The Bahamas International Securities Exchange opened the week with a single trade; but the trade was formidable enough for the BISX to gain 64 basis points to close the day 1,364.24.

Commonwealth Bank which is clearly the darling of investors is clearly demonstrating its clout in the market place. For the past three weeks and more it has simply dominated the BISX eclipsing even FirstCaribbean which is the most influential stock traded on the BISX.

$24m per year to end poverty in the Bahamas

It would cost $24 million annually to lift all poor people in the Bahamas out of poverty, a study for the Government has estimated.

This conclusion was contained in the last Bahamas Living Conditions Survey (BLCS), which was carried out in 2001 and seemingly took some three years for the Department of Statistics to put together.

Three More Movies For Bahamas Film Studios Project

The Bahamas Film Studios have maybe three movies to schedule at their Grand Bahama-based facilities once Disney wraps up work on Pirates of the Caribbean in three weeks time, The Tribune has been told.

Paul Quigley, one of the three founding principals behind the venture, said that once Disney had completed its work on Grand Bahama, the film studios would proceed with the further development of their infrastructure.

New Chicago-Freeport, Bahamas Flight

American Eagle yesterday announced it was adding a non-stop weekend service from Chicago to Freeport, starting on May 6, a move that will provide a small boost for Grand Bahama’s still recovering tourist industry.

The American Airlines affiliate said the new service would be offered each Saturday and Sunday through to September 3, using 70-seat Canadair CRJ-700 jets.

Whale Beached In Central Andros Bahamas

A group of scientists was in Andros yesterday in what marked the first step to discovering what caused a massive Sperm whale to beach itself and die on a shallow bank in Behring Point, an event that has attracted hundreds of residents and curious on-lookers.

Samples were taken from the whale’s body, including the blubber, stomach and heart and will be sent to the University of Tennessee for testing, Leslie Miller, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources told The Bahama Journal on Monday.

Cable Bahamas tops trading on BISX

The market ended the week meekly on Friday with a mere 200 shares of Cable Bahamas moving in a single trade. Fortunately the rest of the week’s trading was more robust.

Apart from Colina ‘wash’ of 600,000 shares, on Tuesday, Commonwealth Bank continued its domination of trading on the BISX for the third consecutive week.

Feel the Rush rivals tour Bimini in The Bahamas

Bimini, the theme of the Second Annual Feel the Rush parade, brought Junkanoo group representatives from Grand Bahama and New Providence to the island’s shimmering shores over the weekend for a first hand glimpse of the isle known as the Gateway to the Bahamas.

Arriving in Bimini on Friday evening, the groups began the first of two days of scheduled events that included a town meeting filled with inviting Biminites and tour of the North and South that took participants along the footsteps of the great men to visit the island in the recent past.
