Bahamian Group Buying Winn-Dixie Stores In $50 Million Deal

As it struggles to rebound from bankruptcy, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. announced yesterday that it will sell all of its 12 supermarkets in The Bahamas to BK Foods Ltd., a local Bahamian company for $50 million.

The announcement was made by the Jacksonville, Florida headquarters.

Hotels look forward to fully-occupied Easter

New Providence hotels are predicting excellent bookings for the Easter Season, with many forecasting 100 per cent occupancies, coming off the back an impressive Spring Break season.

On the Cable Beach strip, Baha Mar’s Radisson Cable Beach Resort, Wyndham Resort and Crystal Palace Casino, and the Nassau Beach Hotel are all fully booked for April.

$50m Bahamas Supermarkets Sale Likely TO Flush Out Rivals

Winn-Dixie yesterday confirmed Tribune Business revelation that Mark Finlayson and Jerome Fitzgerald were leading a group to buy its majority 78 per cent stake in Bahamas Supermarkets, paying $50 million in a deal likely to flush out other bidders.

The agreement reached with Mr Finlayson and Mr Fitzgeralds BK Foods is not a done deal, though as it provides an opportunity for higher and better offers to be submitted to Winn-Dixie for Bahamas Supermarkets.

Long Island Resorts Suffer Major Losses In The Bahamas

Long Islands two premier resorts are suffering significant financial losses five weeks after the closure of the Stella Maris Airport, the owners of both properties told The Tribune yesterday.

But Frank Berke, of Cape Santa Maria, and George Friese, of Stella Maris Resort, welcomed Wednesday’s contract signing repairs to begin on the runway at the Stella Maris Airport.

Third-largest timeshare group in $200m Royal Oasis proposal

The worlds third largest timeshare operator is part of a three-strong consortium that will invest $200 million in transforming the still closed Royal Oasis resort of it succeeds in acquiring the property, The Tribune can reveal, with price the main stumbling block to a deal.

Westgate Resorts, which is based in Orlando, is part of one heck of a team that includes Planet Hollywood, the well-know restaurant and leisure chain, and Harcourt Developments that is involved in intense negotiations with the Royal Oasis owner, Lehman Brothers private equity arm.

Activities announced for World Health Day

In celebration of World Health Day, the Grand Bahama Health Services along with the World Health Committee has declared April as World Health Month and will be holding a series of activities to promote and showcase health professionals on the island.

Organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Health Day will be held on April 7 under the theme, “Working Together For Health.” Emphasis is being placed this year on health care workers who are observed worldwide as the heart of health systems.

GB auto show postponed

The New Car Federation of Grand Bahama announced yesterday that its annual auto show originally scheduled for April 1 has been postponed to May 6.

“We have had great participation sign up but due to Grand Bahama’s many events we, the dealers made a decision to postpone to May,” said Karl Martin, Quality Auto administrator.

Chamber urges for honorary Consul to India

With bilateral relations formed with India, the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce (COC) is now urging the government to appoint an Honorary Consul to India.

In January the COC signed a Joint Business Council agreement with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) which it said would increase mutual trade, and technical and industrial cooperation between the two countries. “The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with India and China were important first steps in laying the framework for cooperation between our respective private sectors. Both countries promised cooperation in a myriad of industries and initiatives so diverse that effective co-ordination is critical,” said Tanya Wright, President of the COC.
