Mackey Street fire

A fire at the plaza on ‘top of the hill Mackey Street completely wiped out five reputable businesses Saturday morning but left one barely touched and open for business today.

Super Value food store stood unyielding, as fire officials worked round the clock to extinguish the blaze that obliterated its neighbouring businesses. Fashion Hall, Discount Mart, Paint Place, Ad Works and Sun Manufacturing Factory all went up in flames over the weekend, and based on the extent of damage, officials report that such businesses may have to start from scratch to get up and running again.

Two jailed in cocaine seizure

Two Bahamian men are being held in a South Florida jail after more than $16.4 million worth of powdered cocaine was seized from their fishing vessel. According to the Associated Press, the boat was travelling from The Bahamas to Florida. Discovered on board the vessel was the captain, Tristan Michael Seymour, 22, of Freeport, Bahamas, and Quincy Nathaniel Garvey, 41.

The US Coast Guard boarded the vessel for a routine inspection on Friday afternoon about 25 miles off the coast of Fort Pierce, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire Destroys Popular Plaza

Super Value food store is the only business still standing at the plaza on top of the hill Mackey Street following a massive fire on Saturday which destroyed 90 percent of the complex.

After a full day of battling the raging blaze, fire department officials launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Bill To Govern LNG

Although the government plans to sign a heads of agreement “any day now” for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in The Bahamas, no such plant would operate without the necessary legislation being in place, according to Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Leslie Miller.

Minister Miller, who was a guest on the Love 97 programme “Jones and Company” which aired on Sunday, assured that the government was adequately addressing all LNG-related concerns.

The Bahamas is an African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) State and is eligible for the awards as outlined in the following article. This is just a small example of the manner in which other ACP countries are developing technologies to assist them in their development efforts. For too long ACP have been depending on the Developed Countries to invent technologies which can be adapted to meet the needs of developing countries like ACP States.

Most of these ACP States are engaged in science and technology programmes which are geared to meet their needs. This award scheme encourages these kinds of programmes.

Funeral Costs Soar

It costs slightly over 95% more to bury a loved one today than it did eight years ago when the average funeral expense was only $3,333, according to the Department of Statistics Average Quarterly Prices for select items and services.

Average prices for the second quarter of 2006 show that it now costs $6,500 for funeral fees which includes a steel casket, two limousines and related burial services. This cost is slightly more than $2,000 over what the cost was in the second quarter of 2005 and 2004, the figures show. In those periods, funeral fees were approximately $4,037.

Minister Hopeful Of BTC Privatization Before End Of Term

Minister of State for Finance James Smith who continues to oversee the Bahamas Telecommunications Companys privatization effort is hopeful that the government will still be able to sell BTC before the end of this present term in office.

“If it’s to be sold at all, it should be sold before that,” he said.
